Case Study
Designing the UX Systems Behind a Next-Gen Console Launch.
Platform: Amazon Luna
Role: Sr. Product Designer
Company: Amazon
Projects: Snap Mode, Achievements, Store, Collection, Notifications
Notable: Contributed to a granted Achievements system patent
01 - Overview
I designed key interface systems for Xbox One, leading Snap Mode UI and contributing to Achievements, Store, Collection, and Notifications.
Project Role:
Led design of Snap Mode UI, enabling multitasking access to core features
Contributed system interface work across Achievements, Store, and Collection
Delivered implementation-ready design specs used in the Xbox One OS launch
02 - Design Problems
The Xbox 360’s interface was limited in terms of multitasking, content access, and UI consistency.
Xbox One required a redesigned system that supported new use cases and a unified design across core features.
No multitasking framework to allow in-game access to apps or features
Inconsistent interaction patterns across Achievements, Store, and media
Navigation and content browsing didn’t scale with growing digital libraries
03 - My Design Role
My specific responsibilities on the project.
I designed the interface and state flows for Snap Mode and collaborated across multiple system features to define layout, UI logic, and behavior.
Owned Snap Mode UI design, including layout, behavior, and transitions
Created state logic and interaction patterns for Collection and Notifications
Defined layout structures and flow for Store and Achievements system UIs
04 - Design Solutions
Design strategies used to solve core platform challenges.
I created reusable systems and interaction rules that scaled across Xbox content, services, and real-time feedback.
Developed modular tile systems to standardize layout across features
Built Snap Mode to support simultaneous in-game feature access
Created consistent focus, state, and navigation patterns for controller input
05 - Team Collaboration
Cross-functional efforts that supported execution.
Worked with engineering, product, and platform teams to integrate, test, and ship the system-level design work.
Partnered with Xbox Live and OS engineers to align on system architecture
Synced with PMs and research to validate design logic and user behavior
Supported QA and final integration during Xbox One launch ramp
